Food Waste - A Hidden Climate Issue
Food waste is one of the most overlooked contributors to climate change. When food scraps go to landfill they break down and release methane, a greenhouse gas far more potent than CO₂. In New Zealand, food waste accounts for around 8–10% of our total greenhouse gas emissions, and the average Kiwi household throws away roughly $1,500 worth of food every year.
The good news is that solutions start locally. Right here on the Hibiscus Coast, City to Farm collects food scraps from local businesses, cafes, schools and retirement villages and uses them to build soil carbon on local farms keeping tonnes of waste out of landfill and putting it to work instead. It's a simple idea done well, and it's happening in our own backyard. citytofarm
