MANLY VILLAGE CHECK POINT

Manly Village History

There have been shops at Manly Village since the 1950's. Little Manly was the home to a wharf with steamers arriving from Auckland, therefore the location of Manly Village was the perfect spot for a development of a second set of shops to serve both the northern and southern bays of the Peninsula.

Several buildings remained single-level for decades and the original shopping development continues today as single level. However there was major development around the village and expansion in the 1970’s.

Once again, a major shift toward multi-storey buildings occurred with the Manly Ridge Apartments project at 60–62 Rawhiti Road proposed with resource consent for this development, which added several floors above retail units, first granted in 2009 and amended in 2013.

Demolition and construction for this complex, featuring ground-floor retail and upper-level apartments, were slated to begin around 2017. However, this project never eventuated.

The upper level of the complex at 54 Rawhiti Road was converted from retail into 7 residential units in 2015.
