The transformation of the Whangaparāoa Peninsula began in the early 2000s. Recognizing a rapidly growing
community, visionaries saw potential where others saw an old Placemakers and industrial yard. By
December 2015, that vision came to life with the opening of New World Whangaparāoa—the peninsula’s
very first New World supermarket.
Opening just in time for the festive season, the 2,710-square-meter store (managed by Penny Ashton)
launched with a team of 90 staff and 215 parking spaces. Today, the supermarket serves as the anchor for a
thriving shopping hub that includes medical facilities, gyms, and local cafes, cementing its place as a vital
community pillar.
Beyond the aisles, New World is a dedicated local partner. They were the first to jump on board with the
Business Whangaparaoa Treasure Hunt, sponsoring a whale tail from the 2022 trail to serve as our very
first checkpoint. Today, James and the New World team continue to be proud, ongoing supporters of the trail
and the wider community.
