"Ocean sprawl" describes the growing spread of coastal engineering into our estuaries, harbours and oceans - marinas, wharves, bridges, pipes, reclamations, aquaculture structures and more. Just as urban sprawl reshapes the land, ocean sprawl progressively modifies our coastline, affecting marine ecosystems, landscapes and future options for coastal use.
The two go hand in hand - our main centres grew beside the sea, bringing ports, flood defences, stormwater outfalls and coastal infrastructure that has significantly altered much of the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park over time.
Gulf Harbour Marina - Leading by Example
Gulf Harbour Marina holds Level 3 Clean Marina accreditation, the highest standard awarded by the New Zealand Marina Operators Association, recognising its commitment to environmentally sound practices. The marina runs an ongoing Pest and Plant Programme and provides recycling and waste disposal facilities for berth holders and visitors.
