Time: 5.30 to 7.30 pm
Venue: The Archer, 570 Whangaparaoa Road
Title: Overcome Helplessness and Thrive in Difficult Times
When an elephant trainer starts working with a baby elephant, he or she will use a rope to tie one of the elephant’s legs to a post. The elephant will struggle for hours, even days, trying to escape the rope, but eventually, it will quiet down and accept its limited range of motion (Wu, 2009).
When the elephant grows up and is more than strong enough to break the rope, it doesn’t even try – it’s learned over time that any kind of struggle is useless.
Like the elephants, we learn a lot of our thought patterns and behaviours early on and it can be hard to change our patterns. So, how can we overcome learned helplessness and make sure we are acting in a proactive accountable way to help us stay on top, even in difficult times?

Speaker: Futurist Dave Wild - Create Your Future
Do you sometimes wonder what your future holds? In the search for answers, it’s easy to miss the signals of the future all around us. However no-one can foresee the future precisely. So the best way to predict the future, is to be the ones creating it. Just as we’re making the machines smarter by writing new code, we can also rewrite our own habits. Changing the way we think. Shifting the way we lead. Creating the future. Today.

There are only two reasons why we do what we do. Either it is because we have developed a habit and we repeat our behaviours almost unconsciously, or secondly, because there is a reward that we expect which we value more than the effort we put into the activity that leads to this reward.
So, when you create a New Year’s resolution or a yearly plan for your business, is this done mostly in the first or second scenario explained above?
Your business plans will seldom stick if they require you to dig deep and for you to verbalize 10 times ‘this year I will be sticking to the plan!
There is another way that will double your chances of sticking to your plan, we will explore this.
